Engineers Without Borders (EWB) had their annual gala on March 8, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the MTCC Ballroom. This event is a formal dinner with the EWB team and mentors and doubles as a fundraiser with our silent auction which would have been impossible without the help of our generous donors. The team celebrated a year of hard work and dedication and we showcased what we had done throughout the year. We also explained our plans for the future.
The evening began with an informal networking session as people signed in and made their way to the ballroom where they began speaking to the members of both the EWB team and the corporate sponsors and mentors of the event. From there, we moved into dinner, courtesy of Chartwells. As dinner began coming to a close, Hanseul Kim, current President of EWB-IIT Chapter stood up to give a presentation. In this presentation, she covered the goals and aspirations of EWB as an organization and then gave us anecdotes on how she managed to get involved. She is graduating this year and leaving the club in the capable hands of the new president who was elected through a democratic process and is now training so that she can smoothly transition into the role next semester.
This was followed by a presentation by the team that traveled to Yucka, Bolivia in December 2018 as part of the pre-assessment trip. EWB is currently focusing on a project in Yucka, Bolivia where we hope to understand the problems faced by the community and provide them with proper sanitation facilities in the form of latrines. Our first idea before the pre-assessment trip was that we could base the design and implementation of this project on our previous project that was based in San Claudio, Nicaragua. However, after having made this trip and better understanding the unique challenges faced by the people in Yucka, we will be coming up with better, more personified solutions for the issues faced by the residents.
After this, we had a Kahoot! trivia game where the theme was Bolivia. Everyone was welcome to play, and each question was based on a different piece of trivia about Bolivia and its inhabitants. The silent auction came to a close right before the trivia began and while people were busy playing, the exec members were sorting through the forms to figure out who had managed to outbid the others on which item. The evening finally came to a close as we announced the winners of each auctioned item as well as the winners of the Kahoot! quiz. All in all, the event was a great success for the entire team and we hope to see you guys next year!
